Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1)

*This review is based on the audio book*

Marissa Meyer's debut novel, Cinder, is a futuristic re-envisioned version of the classic tale of Cinderella.

Blurb:
Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

My thoughts:

I was plesantly surprised by the soothing voice of the narrator. The pace was set nicely and was easy to follow along with. The inflection was executed at the right times throughout and made the story rather enjoyable.

I was a little apprehensive at first, due to Cinder being a cyborg but as the story progressed it was easy to fall into the tale. This was very original and I really liked the characters and their relation to one another. I really liked Prince Kai's character. In his opening scene he came across so real and normal, not a Prince. Bringing work to a unknown mechanic simply by recommendation said a lot about him. Cinder was level headed and was played out well. She was strong and courageous, which I liked that about her.

Overall, this was an enjoyable story.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio, for sharing this brilliant story.
